You might be familiar with Earth Day, but have you ever heard of World Environment Day? Celebrated every year on June 5, it was established by the United Nations in 1972 and has since become the most influential global platform for environmental outreach.
Each year, World Environment Day focuses on a different theme. In 2025, the spotlight is on one of the planet’s most pressing issues: plastic pollution. According to the UN, the world produces over 430 million tonnes of plastic every year, two-thirds of which becomes waste after just one use. Shocking, isn’t it?
At Nutchel, we believe real change comes from small, conscious choices. By reconnecting people to life’s simple pleasures in nature, we do our part to minimise or eliminate plastic wherever we can.
Whether you're ordering a breakfast basket, a barbecue basket, or even a raclette basket at Nutchel, all our food baskets are carefully composed in collaboration with local producers who share our zero plastic values. No individually wrapped food items, no unnecessary packaging. Instead, we portion everything using glass containers, which are not only more sustainable but also much healthier than plastic. So it's not just good for the planet, it's better for you, too!
Whether you're preparing or enjoying your meal in your cabin, one thing’s for sure: you won’t come across any plastic cutlery, cups or plates. At Nutchel, we provide stainless steel utensils, glassware, and enamel mugs — durable, reusable, and perfectly in line with our zero plastic philosophy.
In our cabins, you won’t find any plastic toiletry bottles. Instead, we encourage our guests to bring their own soap bars or solid shampoos. We also sell those in our Honesty Shop inside the Cosy Chalet. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also aligns with a more minimalist, mindful travel experience.
Our Forest Villages are all about authenticity. That’s why, for instance, you won’t find any plastic slides or swings in our playground. We’ve chosen a few simple, wooden structures that fit beautifully into the natural surroundings.
Thirsty after a hike or need a warm drink? There’s no plastic water dispenser or disposable cup waiting for you. Just pour yourself a steaming cup of coffee in an enamel mug, or refill your water bottle straight from the tap. It’s 100% drinkable and actually, it tastes really good!
When planning your trip to Nutchel and packing your bag, we kindly encourage you to pack a few zero waste essentials, such as:
Every small step counts toward building a more sustainable travel culture.
If you’ve stayed at Nutchel before, you already know: we do everything we can to avoid plastic — both in our cabins and throughout the domain. And while it seemed a challenge at first, it quickly turned into a fun and fulfilling mission.
It brings us genuine joy to prove that zero plastic travel is possible in 2025. And truth be told, we couldn’t imagine doing it any other way! Almost like magic, by embracing a zero plastic approach, we also drastically reduce the amount of waste we produce — bringing us, step by step, closer to a true zero waste travel destination.
And guess what? Our guests love it too! Many tell us that after a stay at Nutchel, they felt inspired to bring home new habits — starting with ditching single-use plastic in their daily lives.
What about you? What steps have you taken to reduce plastic in your everyday life? Do you value the zero plastic approach when choosing your next holiday destination?
Or maybe you're curious to try a zero plastic holiday to get inspired and make a few changes in your own routine? If that’s the case, you’ll find yourself more than welcome at Nutchel!
